Column Insertion Rules
·
New columns always appear to the left of the selected
column.
·
Excel shifts existing data to the right when inserting
columns.
·
Formulas referencing shifted cells update
automatically to preserve integrity.
·
Maximum columns in Excel 2019 and later: 16,384 (column XFD).
Preserving Data and Formatting
·
Inserted columns inherit formatting from
adjacent columns (usually from the column to the left).
·
Inserted column width defaults to the width of
the column to its left.
·
Conditional formatting rules extend
automatically when new columns fall inside the rule range.
·
Excel tables
expand automatically to include inserted columns.
Common Column Operations After Insertion

header to auto-fit

width.

exact measurement.
