To lock a row in Excel, you use the Freeze Panes feature. This allows a row to remain visible while scrolling through the rest of the worksheet.
Steps to Lock the Top Row
-
Open your Excel worksheet.
-
Click on the View tab in the ribbon.
-
In the Window group, click Freeze Panes.
-
Select Freeze Top Row from the dropdown menu.
-
The top row will now remain visible while you scroll through other rows.
Steps to Lock a Specific Row
-
Click the row number below the row you want to lock.
-
Go to the View tab.
-
Click Freeze Panes in the Window group.
-
Select Freeze Panes from the dropdown.
-
All rows above the selected row will now remain locked while scrolling.
Notes
-
Freezing the top row is most common when you have headers for columns.
-
You can lock multiple rows by selecting the first row below the rows you want to lock.
-
To unfreeze rows, go to View → Freeze Panes → Unfreeze Panes.
This method works similarly on both Windows and Mac versions of Excel. On Mac, the View tab may appear slightly different, but the Freeze Panes options are the same.
