To mark duplicate values in Excel, you can use Conditional Formatting, which highlights duplicates automatically.
Steps to mark duplicates:
Select the range of cells where you want to find duplicates.
Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.
Click on Conditional Formatting in the Styles group.
Choose Highlight Cells Rules.
Click Duplicate Values.
In the dialog box, select the formatting style you want (for example, a red fill with dark red text).
Click OK.
Excel will immediately highlight all duplicate values in the selected range using your chosen format.
Notes:
Conditional Formatting only highlights duplicates; it does not remove them.
You can adjust the formatting style to make duplicates more noticeable.
On Mac, the steps are the same, but the Conditional Formatting menu might appear under the Format menu instead of the Home tab.
Example:
If a column contains:
A
---
Apple
Banana
Apple
Orange
Banana
After applying duplicate highlighting, Apple and Banana will be marked according to the chosen style.
Optional: Using a formula for more control
Select the range of cells.
Click Conditional Formatting → New Rule → Use a formula to determine which cells to format.
Enter the formula:
=COUNTIF($A$1:$A$10,A1)>1
Set the desired formatting and click OK.
This method allows you to customize ranges or apply complex conditions beyond the default duplicate highlighting.
Do you want me to show a method that tags duplicates with text instead of highlighting?
