To turn off conditional formatting in Excel, follow these steps:
-
Select the cells with conditional formatting
Highlight the range of cells where the formatting is applied. To select the entire sheet, click the triangle at the top-left corner of the grid. -
Open the Conditional Formatting menu
Go to the Home tab on the Ribbon. In the Styles group, click Conditional Formatting. -
Clear rules
-
Click Clear Rules.
-
Choose Clear Rules from Selected Cells to remove formatting only from the highlighted cells.
-
Choose Clear Rules from Entire Sheet to remove all conditional formatting from the worksheet.
-
-
Confirm removal
The cells will return to their default formatting, removing any color changes, data bars, or icon sets applied through conditional formatting.
Notes for Windows vs Mac
-
Windows: Steps are exactly as described above.
-
Mac: Conditional Formatting is found under the Home tab as well. The options are Clear Rules from Selected Cells or Clear Rules from Entire Sheet. The menu layout may appear slightly different, but it functions identically.
Extra tip
To temporarily disable conditional formatting without deleting rules:
-
Go to Conditional Formatting → Manage Rules.
-
Select the rule and uncheck Stop If True or temporarily change the rule criteria.
-
Click Apply to keep the rule without triggering it immediately.
This method keeps the rules in the workbook for future use while preventing them from affecting your current view.
