To unmerge a cell in Excel, follow these steps:
-
Select the merged cell or range of merged cells.
-
Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.
-
Locate the Merge & Center button in the Alignment group.
-
Click the Merge & Center dropdown arrow.
-
Select Unmerge Cells.
The selected cells will return to individual cells, retaining the content only in the upper-left cell of the original merged range. All other cells will be empty.
Additional Notes
-
The Merge & Center option works the same way on both Windows and Mac versions. On a Mac, the button is located in the Home tab under Alignment, but the icon may appear slightly smaller.
-
Formatting like text alignment, font style, or background color remains unchanged when a cell is unmerged.
-
If multiple merged cells are selected, Excel will unmerge all of them at once.
Quick Keyboard Method (Windows)
-
Select the merged cell.
-
Press Alt → H → M → U sequentially.
This sequence quickly unmerges the cell without navigating through the ribbon.
