To unwrap text in Excel, you need to disable the text wrapping feature. Text wrapping is used when a cell contains more text than its width, and Excel automatically moves the text to a new line within the same cell. Unwrapping restores the text to a single line.
Steps to unwrap text
-
Select the cell or range of cells that you want to unwrap.
-
Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.
-
In the Alignment group, find the Wrap Text button.
-
Click the Wrap Text button to turn it off. The text will now appear in a single line.
Adjusting column width
Unwrapping text may cause some text to be hidden if the column is too narrow. Adjust the column width as follows:
-
Hover the cursor over the right border of the column header.
-
Click and drag to increase the width manually.
-
Alternatively, double-click the right border to auto-fit the column to the text length.
Using Format Cells dialog
-
Select the cell or range.
-
Press Ctrl + 1 (Windows) or Command + 1 (Mac) to open the Format Cells dialog.
-
Go to the Alignment tab.
-
Uncheck the Wrap text checkbox.
-
Click OK.
Additional tips
-
Unwrapping text may affect readability if the content is long. Consider using multiple columns or resizing cells for better visibility.
-
Text wrapping and unwrapping do not affect the content of the cell; only the display changes.
This method works consistently on both Windows and Mac versions of Excel.
