## Example of Spearman Rank Correlation

In a Test, a tutor wishes to know the rank of the subjects and the Spearman rank correlation. The scores for the subjects is as follows;

Literature: 56,32, 64, 89,45,34, 34, 98, 53, 23

Philosophy: 54, 74, 64,75,93, 54,24, 29,54, 45

The formula for the Spearman rank correlation coefficient is given by;$\rho =1-\frac{6\underset{}{\sum {d}_{i}^{2}}}{n({n}^{2}-1)}$

In the above example, both the subjects have been ranked from the student with the highest to the lowest mark

Hence the Spearman rank coefficient will be;

$\rho =1-\frac{6\times 149}{9(81-1)}$

$\rho =1-\frac{894}{720}$

$\rho =1-1.24167$

=-0.24167
