Excel chart title not showing

The chart title may not show because the Chart Title element is turned off, the title text is blank or linked to an empty cell, the title is formatted with the same color as the background, the title is positioned off the visible area, the chart type does not display titles in the same way, or the workbook/compatibility settings removed it. 

Is the Chart Title enabled?

Yes. Check the Chart Elements control: select the chart and use the Chart Elements button (the plus sign) or Chart Design → Add Chart Element → Chart Title to turn the title on. If the Chart Title box is unchecked, the title will not display. 

How to restore a missing chart title

To restore a missing chart title, follow these steps:

1. Select the chart by clicking inside its border.

2. Use the Chart Elements button (a plus sign) at the upper-right of the chart and check Chart Title, or go to Chart Design → Add Chart Element → Chart Title and choose Above Chart or Centered Overlay Title. 

3. If a title appears but it's blank, click the chart title once to select it and type the text you want.

4. If the title should reflect a worksheet cell, select the chart title, click the formula bar, type =, then click the cell, and press Enter to link it. Do not double-click inside the title when creating a link. 

5. If the title remains invisible, open the Format Chart Title pane (right-click the title and choose Format Chart Title) and check the Text Fill color and Transparency settings; set text fill to an appropriate color and transparency to 0%. 

6. If the chart is part of a pivot chart or specialized chart type, confirm that the chart type supports titles or add the title from the Chart Design tab. Some chart types treat titles differently. 

What to check when the title seems present but invisible

The title may be invisible for these reasons; check each condition:

1. Title text is white on a white background or matches the chart background.

2. Title is linked to a cell that contains an empty string or a formula that returns "".

3. Title position is set as an overlay and clipped by chart size; resize the chart or change position to Above Chart.

4. Chart is protected, or worksheet objects are hidden; check sheet protection and object visibility.

5. Compatibility mode removes complex formatting, or the title exceeds 255 characters, for older Excel versions. 

How to link a chart title to a worksheet cell

To make the chart title update automatically from a cell:

1. Click the chart title once to select it.

2. Click the formula bar.

3. Type = then click the worksheet cell containing the title text.

4. Press Enter.

5. To reestablish the link after editing the chart title directly, repeat these steps. 

Are there differences between Windows and Mac?

Yes. The commands are the same in principle; ribbon labels and the task pane placement may differ between platforms.

1. On Windows: use Chart Design → Add Chart Element → Chart Title or the Chart Elements (+) button on the chart. The Format pane appears on the right. 

2. On Mac: use the Chart Design tab or the chart contextual menu; the Format sidebar may appear on the right. The option names may read the same, but the interface layout can be different. If a button is missing on the ribbon, open the Format/Chart Design panes to find title controls. 

What to do when a chart title disappears after changing the chart type or editing?

When the chart type changes or you edit the title inside the chart, links and formatting can break. Resolve this by:

1. Re-adding the title via Chart Design → Add Chart Element → Chart Title.

2. Re-linking the title to the worksheet cell if needed, using the formula-bar method.

3. Checking compatibility settings if the workbook was saved to an older Excel format; shorten titles longer than 255 characters.
