Freezing specific rows in Excel keeps them visible while scrolling through the rest of the worksheet. This is useful for headers, labels, or important data that must remain in view.
Steps to Freeze Specific Rows
-
Select the row immediately below the rows you want to freeze.
-
For example, to freeze rows 1 and 2, select row 3.
-
-
Go to the View tab on the Ribbon.
-
Click on Freeze Panes in the Window group.
-
Choose Freeze Panes from the drop-down menu.
-
This option freezes all rows above the selected row.
-
-
Scroll down to confirm the frozen rows remain visible while the rest of the sheet moves.
Additional Options
-
Freeze Top Row:
-
Freezes only the first row of the worksheet. Useful when the first row contains column headers.
-
-
Unfreeze Panes:
-
Removes all frozen rows and columns.
-
Access this option from View > Freeze Panes > Unfreeze Panes.
-
Notes
-
On Mac, the commands are similar: Go to Window > Freeze Panes instead of the Ribbon menu.
-
Only continuous rows starting from the top can be frozen using Freeze Panes. Non-adjacent rows require a different approach, like copying them to the top.
Example
To keep your quarterly sales headers visible:
-
Your headers are in rows 1–2.
-
Select row 3.
-
Apply Freeze Panes.
-
As you scroll through hundreds of sales records, rows 1 and 2 remain visible.
This ensures constant visibility of crucial reference data while analyzing large datasets
