To sort numbers in Excel, you can organize data in ascending or descending order. Sorting rearranges rows based on the values in a selected column while keeping the associated data intact.
Steps to Sort Numbers in Excel

Select the Data Column
Click on any cell in the column containing numbers you want to sort. Ensure the entire dataset is selected to prevent misalignment of data. -
Open the Sort Options

On Windows, go to the Data tab and click Sort.

On Mac, go to the Data menu and select Sort.

Choose Sort Order

Ascending: Smallest to largest numbers.

Descending: Largest to smallest numbers.

Apply Sorting
Click OK (Windows) or Sort (Mac) to rearrange your numbers. Excel automatically moves the entire rows to match the sorted column.
Sorting Multiple Columns

Select your entire dataset.

Open the Sort dialog from the Data tab or menu.

Click Add Level to sort by additional columns.

Set the priority of columns. Excel sorts first by the top-level column, then by the next level.
Example
Suppose you have a list of sales figures in Column B:

Sorting ascending in Column B changes the order to: 500, 800, 1200.

Quick Sort Buttons

On Windows, the A→Z button sorts ascending, Z→A sorts descending.

Notes

Ensure there are no blank rows inside the data range; otherwise, Excel might treat the data as separate ranges.

If numbers are stored as text, sorting may not work correctly. Convert text to numbers using the VALUE function or by multiplying the column by 1.
