To sort birthdays by month in Excel, follow these steps:
-
Select the Birthday Column
Click on the column that contains the birthdays. Ensure the cells are formatted as dates. -
Insert a Helper Column
Create a new column next to the birthday column. Label it Month. -
Extract the Month
In the first cell of the helper column, enter the formula:=MONTH(A2)
Replace
A2with the cell reference of the first birthday. This formula returns the month number (1 for January, 2 for February, etc.). -
Fill Down the Formula
Drag the fill handle (small square at the bottom-right corner of the cell) down to apply the formula to all rows. -
Sort by Month
-
Select all the data including the helper column.
-
Go to the Data tab.
-
Click Sort.
-
In the Sort dialog, choose the Month column under "Sort by".
-
Select Smallest to Largest to sort from January to December.
-
Click OK.
-
-
Optional: Remove the Helper Column
After sorting, you can delete the helper column if you no longer need it. The birthdays will remain sorted by month.
Notes
-
Sorting by the MONTH function works regardless of the year.
-
For Mac, the steps are identical, except the Sort option is under the Data menu instead of a ribbon tab.
-
To display birthdays in a text format like "January," "February," use the formula:
=TEXT(A2,"mmmm")
Sorting by this column will arrange the months alphabetically.
This method ensures birthdays are grouped by month while preserving the original day order within each month.
