To redo the last action in Excel, use the built-in Redo command. The command restores the most recent change that was undone. Excel performs this through a simple keyboard shortcut or ribbon control.
Windows
-
Press Ctrl + Y.
-
Select Redo from the Quick Access Toolbar if you added it.
-
Click the Redo icon in the ribbon when the toolbar displays it.
Mac
-
Press Command + Y.
-
Open the Edit menu at the top of the screen.
-
Select Redo.
Additional Notes
Excel tracks actions in a sequential stack. Redo becomes unavailable after new actions are performed because the stack resets. The feature supports formatting edits, text edits, structural edits, data entry edits, and command edits. The command does not work for actions that cannot be undone or actions that come after file-level changes such as saving.
Steps to Add Redo to the Quick Access Toolbar
-
Select the drop-down arrow on the Quick Access Toolbar.
-
Choose More Commands.
-
Select Redo from the list.
-
Click Add.
-
Select OK.
What happens when Redo stops working?
Redo stops working when Excel no longer has a stored undone instruction. This occurs when a fresh command replaces the previous state.
