The shortcut for merging cells in Excel is not a single dedicated key. Excel uses a sequential keyboard shortcut through the Ribbon.
Windows Shortcut
The merge command uses Ribbon navigation:
-
Press Alt
-
Press H
-
Press M
-
Press M for “Merge & Center”
(Press A for “Merge Across” or U for “Unmerge Cells”)
Excel performs the merge immediately when the sequence completes.
Mac Shortcut
Mac does not include a built-in merge shortcut. Mac executes the merge command through the toolbar when a user assigns a custom shortcut.
How to create a merge shortcut on Mac
-
Open System Settings.
-
Select Keyboard.
-
Select Keyboard Shortcuts.
-
Select App Shortcuts.
-
Select Microsoft Excel.
-
Type Merge & Center exactly as it appears on the Excel Ribbon.
-
Assign a shortcut such as Control + Option + M.
Mac activates the merge action when the custom shortcut matches the command name.
Additional Notes
The Ribbon path for merging cells is Home → Alignment → Merge & Center. Excel groups Merge & Center, Merge Across, Merge Cells, and Unmerge Cells under the same menu.
