To autofit row height in Excel, the row automatically adjusts to fit the content within the cells. This ensures that text, numbers, or wrapped content is fully visible without manually resizing the row.
Steps to Autofit Row Height
-
Select the Rows
Click on the row number(s) on the left of the worksheet to select the rows you want to adjust. You can select multiple rows by holding Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) while clicking the row numbers. -
Use the Ribbon Menu
-
Go to the Home tab.
-
In the Cells group, click on Format.
-
Under Cell Size, select AutoFit Row Height.
-
-
Use the Right-Click Menu
-
Right-click on the selected row number(s).
-
Choose Row Height → Click AutoFit (Windows only) or simply select AutoFit Row Height on newer versions.
-
-
Use the Mouse
-
Move the cursor to the bottom edge of the row number until it changes to a double-headed arrow.
-
Double-click the row border. The row height will adjust to the tallest content in that row.
-
Notes on Autofit Row Height
-
Autofit works best when text wrapping is enabled. To enable text wrapping, go to the Home tab → Alignment group → click Wrap Text.
-
Merged cells do not autofit properly. You may need to manually adjust the row height for merged cells.
-
Empty cells do not affect row height. The row height adjusts based only on the content in the selected cells.
Shortcut for Quick Autofit
-
Windows: Select the rows → press Alt + H + O + A sequentially.
-
Mac: There is no direct keyboard shortcut. Use the Ribbon or Mouse double-click method.
Example
Suppose row 5 contains a long paragraph in cell B5. By selecting row 5 and using any of the autofit methods, Excel will automatically increase the height of row 5 so that the full paragraph is visible without cutting off any text.
Autofitting row height improves readability and ensures professional-looking spreadsheets with properly displayed data.
