To pin a header in Excel, use the Freeze Panes feature. This allows the top row or selected rows to remain visible while scrolling through data.
Steps to Pin the Header (Top Row)
-
Open your Excel worksheet.
-
Click on the View tab in the Ribbon.
-
Select Freeze Panes in the Window group.
-
Choose Freeze Top Row.
-
The top row will remain visible as you scroll down the worksheet.
-
Excel adds a faint line below the frozen row to indicate it is pinned.
Steps to Pin Multiple Rows (Custom Header)
-
Select the row immediately below the rows you want to pin.
-
Go to the View tab.
-
Click Freeze Panes.
-
Select Freeze Panes from the dropdown.
-
All rows above the selected row will stay visible while scrolling.
-
This is useful for tables with multiple header rows.
Pin Header on Mac
-
Open the worksheet.
-
Go to the Window menu.
-
Choose Freeze Panes.
-
Select either Freeze Top Row or Freeze Panes depending on whether you want the top row or multiple rows pinned.
To Unfreeze Panes
-
Go to the View tab (Windows) or Window menu (Mac).
-
Click Freeze Panes.
-
Select Unfreeze Panes.
-
This restores normal scrolling.
-
You can then freeze a different row or column if needed.
Tips
-
Freezing works only for rows above the selected cell.
-
You can freeze columns in a similar way by selecting the column to the right of the ones you want to pin and choosing Freeze Panes.
-
Combine row and column freezing to keep both headers and key columns visible.
This method ensures headers remain visible, improving readability in large datasets.
